High Country Farm and Garden Tour:
Visit 12 Sustainable, Biodynamic, and Organic Farms in Watauga & Ashe Counties
Boone, NC ? Summer is in full swing in the High Country, and organic foods are hotter than ever this year. The High Country Farm and Garden Tour will provide consumers a unique opportunity to see their local farmers in action, growing and raising sustainable produce, animal products, cut flowers, and more! On July 22 and 23, from 1 ? 5 p.m., folks will be able to tour 12 small sustainable farms and gardens to find out how the local farmers are growing their food!
Organized by the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) and the Watauga County Cooperative Extension Office, the High Country Farm and Garden Tour will draw hundreds of visitors to 12 family farms in Watauga & Ashe Counties. All proceeds benefit CFSA.
Kids will enjoy seeing goats, chickens and pigs and a special treat, picking their own berries. Adults will love buying farm fresh eggs, honey, fruits, and vegetables. This year, 5 new farms will make their touring debuts, so even those who have taken the tour year after year will see something new!
It?s the perfect chance for folks to get ideas for their own farms and gardens. Anyone who?s been thinking about leading a more sustainable life will benefit from seeing the organic methods that the featured farmers are using. From pasture based livestock management to organic mushroom production and organic composting, there is something for everyone to learn and enjoy.
To take the tour, visitors should load up a car with family and friends, pick up a map from a local venue (a list is available online), and decide which farms to visit. The cost of the tour is $10 per car per farm, $25 per car for all 12 farms (pay at the first farm), or admission buttons can be purchased in advance for only $20 per car for all farms. Tour maps with full farm descriptions are available at local stores and restaurants or they can be downloaded from the CFSA website: www.carolinafarmstewards.org.
Folks may buy their buttons in advance online at the website above, or at these local venues: Watauga County Farmers? Market, Ashe County Farmers? Market, Bare Essentials Natural Market, Earth Fare, Razzberry?s Natural Market, and Maverick Farms (on Friday July 21, 4 ? 8 PM only).
